Nebraska Speech-Language Pathologist License Renewal Procedure
License renewals can be completed online through the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) portal. On December 1st of even-numbered years, all SLP licenses expire. Renewal notifications are sent to your address of record no less than 30 days from the expiration date.
Before the December 1st due date, licensees are required to meet the continuing education (CE) requirements for the profession. Continuing education ensures SLPs keep their knowledge and techniques updated to deliver high-quality and effective services. Licensees must complete a minimum of 20 hours before the new renewal cycle begins.
CE activities must be sponsored or endorsed by an approved organization and focus on the discipline of speech-language pathology. Below is a list of approved continuing education sponsors and the type of documentation you need from the instructor to prove you’ve completed the CE activity.
- ASHA: Documents include the program’s current certification
- Programs provided at state and national SLP meetings: Certificate of attendance; list of presentations attended and program objective or outline
- Formal education courses and presentations: Certificate of attendance; program outline; date, location, number of hours completed, and course title
- University-sponsored courses: Official transcript and program objective
- Home Study: You need a testing mechanism scored by the course provider. This includes but isn’t limited to self-study, independent study, and online studies. A certificate of completion is needed as an outline of the program detailing its objective.
- Research/Scholarly Activities: Any research or scholarly activities you authored, edited, co-authored, or co-edited, that are published in a professional publication are approved. Simply provide the publication as verification.
- National Specialty Certification Exam: Provide the certification as proof.
- Scientific Presentations: Lectures or essays presented by you to a group of SLPs or other licensed healthcare professionals will count toward your CE hours. Documents should include the program brochure with your name as the presenter, the course outline or objectives, and a statement of your qualifications to teach the class.
- Poster Sessions: Certificate of attendance; list of poster sessions attended; program outline.
The Department has the final say as to whether a CE activity or program is acceptable. CE courses should be relative to the theory of speech-language pathology or the clinical application of theories. Some of the unacceptable CE topics are:
- Marketing, business operations, and operations
- Personal self-improvement, human relations, and time management courses
- Courses designed for lay-persons
- Teaching non-credentialed individuals
- Classes less than 30 min.
- Attending or participating in case conferences and facility tours
If you miss the renewal deadline and your license expires, you will have to apply for reinstatement. Both the renewal and reinstatement fees are $140.
