Renewals are completed through the online renewal system. Limited Licenses can be renewed when needed for part-time employment, completing the Praxis exam, or any other reasons the Board deems acceptable. These licenses are good for one year, and if you don’t transition into a full license two years from the date of issuance, you have to wait at least one year before applying for another license.
Full Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) licenses are renewed on a biennial schedule. Before the online renewal process opens licensees are asked to update their mailing and e-mail address, if necessary. A renewal notice will be issued to you 60 days before the license expires.
Maryland uses a prorated system to determine CE hours for new or reinstated licensees, and those transferring from another jurisdiction. It is based on the date your new full license was issued.
Newly licensed SLPs will have a smaller number of CE hours to complete. For example, someone licensed in January of a new renewal cycle may have to complete 16 CE hours. An individual granted licensure with only two months left in the renewal cycle may only need 3 CE hours.
If this isn’t your first renewal cycle, a minimum of 30 CE hours are needed. Documenting your CE hours is your responsibility. Each program you attend must give you a certificate of completion you are required to hold on to for four years. If you are part of the 10% of licensees that are audited each year you will have to produce documents to verify your CE hours.
ASHA provides a list of approved CE offerings in your area. Hours can be acquired by attending conferences, webinars, and other educational SLP events. The Maryland Speech-Language-Hearing Association (MSHA) also has information on its website about approved CE events.
The renewal fees are as follows:
