Speech-language pathology licenses expire every June 30th in Virginia, and renewal must be done before this date to avoid a late fee of $25 in addition to the annual SLP renewal fee of $75. A renewal application must be submitted by midnight on the expiration date to ensure timely SLP renewal, regardless of whether a renewal notice is received.
Speech-language pathologists are responsible for initiating the renewal process, and the Virgin Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology advises each licensee to develop a personal reminder system to keep track of this critical task. In addition, to facilitate the renewal process, it is essential to maintain current contact information, including the address of record and email address, which can be updated online or by contacting the board office.
To renew your SLP license online, you can use any of the following credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover. Rest assured that your credit card payment will be processed securely and encrypted to protect you.
Each License Renewal Notice sent out by the Virginia Department of Health Professions now contains a Personal Identification Number (PIN) for your convenience. This notice is typically sent around 60 days before your license expires. To complete the renewal process on the website, you will need to have your username and password or this PIN.
If you misplaced your username and password or have not received a PIN, email the Agency’s Call Center.
Upon completing the renewal process, a receipt page will be provided to confirm that the process has been completed. It is recommended that this page be printed for personal records. Typically, license renewal is processed within 30 minutes of payment. Additionally, the License Lookup web page can be used to check the status of one’s license.
In addition, to maintain your SLP license, you must complete 10 contact hours of continuing education before December 31st each year. Any excess continuing education hours, up to 10, can be carried over to the next renewal year as credit.
